Transition into Fall

Fall transition outfits are always challenging. We can usually count on wearing sundresses in July and sweaters in January, but these tricky in-between-season months, like September through November, can be tough! You may check the weather before you leave the house and think you’re set, but then, the sun disappears behind a cloud and a comfortable temperature is suddenly chill-inducing. On the other hand, if you head out the door in a wool sweater, you’ll feel like you’re boiling before long. Read on for a few tips for dressing comfortably during these finicky months.

Fall Transition Outfit Footwear

While sandals will work with most outfits, at some point you will want to wear those closed-toe shoes. With a simple shoe switch, you can quickly transition your clothing from summer to fall. Swap your sandals for shoes like loafers, sneakers and mules. These shoes are a fall wardrobe necessity that will instantly make all of your summer clothing warmer and more practical. Everything from skirts to pants to shorts will look better by adding a pair of loafers or slip-on sneakers.

Layering: A Fall Transition Outfit Staple

It seems like a simple concept (just layer different pieces on top of one another), but during a transitional season, it’s a little more intricate than that. The trick is to make sure that you’re layering light items. If you have three layers that are all thick fabrics, it doesn’t matter that you can take off two of them — you might still be hot! The simplest way to create a summer to fall transitional outfit is by adding a layer to your favorite summer look. Simply throw on a go-to outfit you’ve been rocking all summer and add a sweater or cardigan. Opt for lightweight knit sweaters, kimono cardigans or sport coats to keep the materials airy when the day is still warm.

Wear Darker Colors

Another general tip that will carry your transitional outfits through the seasons is changing the color scheme of your looks. Colors communicate your season, so stay away from summer colors, like bright red and blue, in favor of moodier hues, including camel, burgundy, navy, rust, and black.

Bonus Tip: Overalls

Do you have a pair yet? If you haven’t heard, toddler chic is back and we’re all about it. Searching through the racks to find anything that screams “Wear me apple-picking!” is a definite yes.
