Remembering The Homeless on ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’
With the holiday season behind us and the new decade well underway, it is easy to forget about the vulnerable people in our community. While the ‘Spirit of Giving’ is prevalent throughout November and December, unfortunately, this generous sentiment rarely carries into January and the remaining winter months. February is not only the month of love, but it houses Random Acts of Kindness Day. We want to pick up on these sentiments of love and kindness and invite you to remember to extend kindness to the individuals experiencing homelessness in the Buffalo community.
Each year, it is estimated that approximately 5,500 individuals experience homelessness in Western New York. In fact, over 45% of individuals in Buffalo and Erie County are living below the poverty line. Homelessness in our community does not discriminate, as it impacts individuals of all races, and education levels. In order to face the issue of homelessness, and help these vulnerable individuals and families in our community, Hearts for the Homeless has developed numerous programs that provide resources and support for their efforts.
Here at Hearts for the Homeless, we work hard to serve the local community by feeding the poor and homeless, while also helping the community at large by creating better living environments through Hearts Ministry Center. Hearts is characterized by a profound spiritual motivation as we offer nourishing food and warm winter clothing to individuals in need. We also provide pertinent information regarding local area services, companionship, and hope for a brighter future.
Random Acts of Kindness Day was created in order to perpetuate the belief that all people can connect through kindness. People celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day in order to help make kindness the norm, and to encourage people to get outside of their comfort zones to seek opportunities to be kind. Here at Hearts for the Homeless, we want to encourage everyone in the Buffalo community to extend their kindness and generosity to the Buffalo’s homeless community. It’s as easy as cleaning out your closet and finding one of our distinct red clothing bins and donating those clothing, shoes, and accessory items you don’t need. To find a donation bin near you, visit our Bin Finder!
If you are moved by the spirit of kindness this month, consider making a donation to Hearts for the Homeless. We accept monetary donations, as well as donations of warm winter clothing such as gloves, coats, and scarves. These items can be dropped off at our outreach center at 890 Tonawanda St. Buffalo, 14207 (side entrance off parking lot).
